Why is Environmental Training Important?

An organization's environmental management-- balancing its commercial needs with the needs of the environment -- is a crucial key to its success. Not appropriately training for environmental impact is a highly risky situation no organization should want to be in.

In many instances, environmental training is a regulatory requirement, not a choice.

Nearly all environmental permits and plans, for example, require annual or regular training. There are  environmental reporting requirements, both at the national and state levels . (Just think for a moment if the organization is located in several states. Compliance with each state's regulations is then mandatory.)

In many instances, state rules and regulations are even more strict than federal rules. Staying current on both state and federal requirements is critical . Ignorance is not a defense when it comes to non-compliance.

If your organization's activities impact air or water quality, emissions or marine, you are assured to be following EPA and state regulatory agencies as a routine matter. There may even be recycling schemes the organization must follow.

What are the Benefits of Environmental Training?

As if saving the planet isn't enough! Organizations also benefit from environmental training in the following ways:

  • Favorable Corporate Reputation – Remember the situation with Exxon and the Valdeez oil tanker? People could not get the image of oil-covered baby seals out of their minds and boycotted the company. Environmentally-conscious companies are generally perceived more positively and as more trustworthy.
  • Reduced Costs  – Managing the organization from an environmental point of view can lead to reduced materials and energy consumption; thereby saving money. The "Think before you Print" campaign is meant to save paper, save trees; thereby saving the organization money in the process. (Win-Win-Win!)
  • Employee Satisfaction – Employees want the company they work for to be caring and empathetic. When employees feel good (and proud!) about their company's initiatives, they are more satisfied and less likely to leave.

Compliance and Environmental Awareness Training

Despite the fact that state and federal governments lead the way in setting big "green" initiatives, individuals and organizations can do much more towards the protection of the environment.

Environmental awareness training encourages employees to be mindful of the environmental impact of their economic choices and behaviors (ex., creating reduced and/or non-plastic packaging. printing avoidance, consolidated shipping, rail vs. air delivery).

Training helps individual employees raise their environmental awareness so as to become more understanding of how their jobs and their actions in their jobs create an environmental impact. Environmental awareness training also subsequently then mitigates the organizational risk associated with the environmental impact of its activities.

Environmental awareness training has become an important tool not only in ensuring compliance with regulations but also in increasing the level of knowledge and awareness within an organization. Compliance becomes a much easier task when employees have a good understanding of the interplay between the organization's environmental impact and the impact of various laws.

Staying Current with Routine Training and Continuing Education

Environmental training includes the latest in industry best practices, safety procedures, operationalization of regulatory changes, and more. It gives you the essentials you need in terms of updates and certifications.

Staying current with industry best practices and new trends is also an "easy" way to create new ideas for the improvement of your current procedures and protocols. Routine training keeps your organization up to date and gives you the best chance at maintaining environmental compliance.

Regular skills training is important for employees to maintain their environmental awareness as well as to certify certain employees to safely perform their duties. For environmental engineering disciplines, continuing education is even required to earn professional development hours (PDH).

When environmental training occurs on a regular basis it helps your organization achieve its environmental and related business objectives.
